92% of nonprofits have harassment policies in place, but is it enough?
Nonprofits aren’t immune to the reality of workplace harassment - unwelcome behaviour that demeans, humiliates or embarrasses employees and can lead to decreased productivity, high turnover, and poor morale. This Nonprofits at Noon featured a panel discussion focused on how organizations can identify and deal with this distressing issue. CCVO’s President & CEO David Mitchell welcomed Roger Chaffin, former Calgary Police Chief, and Pam Krause, President & CEO of the Centre for Sexuality for a candid discussion on harassment and workplace culture.
As Police Chief, Roger Chaffin dealt with allegations of bullying, harassment, and sexual assault when numerous formal complaints by current and former Calgary Police employees were made public. These allegations pointed to a bigger issue - one that Pam Krause is working to address by creating tools to identify harassment and protect employees. Attendees learned how their organization can benefit from the important work being done at the Centre for Sexuality, and the steps that Roger took to help his staff feel safe and improve morale.

about the speakers
Roger Chaffin
Roger retired from his position as Calgary Police Chief in January 2019, following a 32-year career with the Calgary Police Service. As Chief, Chaffin set the Calgary Police Service on a course to become a modern police service that reflects the values and characteristics of our community. As a senior officer, he held the positions of Duty Inspector as well as the Inspector in charge of the Chief Crowfoot Learning Center. Following his promotion to the rank of Superintendent, he was first assigned to the Office of the Chief in charge of areas such as Professional Standards, FOIP, Legal Services and Strategic Communications. He was promoted to Deputy Chief in 2010, in charge of the Bureau of Organizational Support.
In 2015, Roger was appointed to the Order of Merit for Police Forces, one of the country’s most important honours. This achievement recognized the many years of service and leadership he has dedicated to the Calgary Police Service on behalf of the citizens of Calgary. He has also received the Queens Diamond Jubilee Medal, Federal Exemplary Service Medal, Alberta Law Enforcement Long Service Medal, Calgary Police Service Distinguished Service Medal and Calgary Police Service Chief’s Award of Excellence.
Pam Krause
Pam is the President and CEO of the Centre for Sexuality (formerly the Calgary Sexual Health Centre). She has been with the Agency since 2001, taking on the leadership role in 2004. Graduating from the University of Calgary with a BA in Political Science, Pam began her career in municipal and provincial politics.
An advocate and activist on issues related to women’s equality and social justice, Pam has worked and volunteered in the Calgary non-profit community for 25 years. Her previous roles include work with the Elizabeth Fry Society, where she advanced the opening of the first half way house exclusively for women in Alberta.
Under Pam’s leadership, the Centre for Sexuality has grown and today is the only non-profit organization in our community that provides comprehensive sexual health education programs and services to people across the lifespan. The Centre is recognized as a leader for implementing innovative sexual health programs that have meaningful results for the populations they serve.
Pam’s leadership has been recognized by being named a Global Television Woman of Vision, and she is a recipient of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal for her years of community service. In 2017 Pam was named as one of 150 Calgary women who have impacted Calgary over the past 150 years by the YW Calgary She Who Dares initiative. Most recently, Pam has been appointed to the Board of Governors at the University of Calgary. Pam has a wealth of experience in leadership, governance and social innovation and is a strong advocate in our community.
