Government of Alberta Cabinet Shuffle

On August 25, the Government of Alberta announced a cabinet shuffle that changed the portfolios of two ministers and added a new cabinet minister.

Former Justice and Solicitor General minister, Doug Schweitzer, will serve as Minister of Jobs, Economy and Innovation. This department replaces the previous Economic Development, Trade and Tourism portfolio headed by Tanya Fir. This rebranded department will have a slightly new mandate that will oversee the Alberta Recovery Plan. Minister Schweitzer will be responsible for launching the Invest Alberta Agency to attract investment to the province, implement the Innovation Employment Grant, and oversee the Alberta Petrochemical Incentive Program.

Tanya Fir will move to the backbench, where she will continue to serve as the MLA for Calgary-Peigan.

Tracy Allard, MLA for Grande Prairie, is welcomed to the cabinet as the new Minister of Municipal Affairs. Minister Allard will be responsible for publishing a fiscal report card on rural municipalities where she will compare them to other municipalities across Canada.

Kaycee Madu has moved from Municipal Affairs to serve as the Minister of Justice and Solicitor General. Minister Madu will oversee the completion of the statutory review of the Police Act, be responsible for the changes regarding recall legislation and citizen initiatives, and oversee the Fair Deal Panel.
