The inaugural event on October 24 featured the launch of an important new CCVO research report: Lighting the Way - The State of the Alberta Nonprofit Sector 2018. This year’s report was – for the first time – informed not only by a province-wide survey, but also by focus groups and personal interviews with nonprofit leaders. This report explores the state of the sector, looks to the year ahead, and shares priorities of nonprofits for the upcoming provincial election – and some suggestions for collective action.
Nonprofits at Noon is stimulated by expert perspectives and a collegial atmosphere. Attendees learned what Lighting the Way says about the sector, and about advocacy efforts that might be effective to create change. Janet Brown, Pollster and Political Commentator, and Duane Bratt, Political Science Professor and Chair, Department of Economics, Mount Royal University shared their perspectives to start the conversation with those in attendance.

Duane Bratt
Duane is a political science Professor and Chair in the Department of Economics, Justice, and Policy Studies at Mount Royal University (Calgary, Alberta). He was educated at the Universities of Windsor (BA 1991, MA 1992) and Alberta (Ph.D 1996). He teaches in the area of international relations and Canadian public policy. His primary research interest is in the area of Canadian nuclear policy. Recent publications include: co-editor, Orange Chinook: Politics in the New Alberta (University of Calgary Press, 2018), co-editor, Readings in Canadian Foreign Policy: Classic Debates and New Ideas 3rd edition (Oxford University Press, 2015) and author of Canada, the Provinces, and the Global Nuclear Revival (McGill-Queen’s University Press, 2012). Current projects include the risk assessment of Canada’s nuclear waste site selection process. Duane is also a regular commentator on political events.
Janet Brown
With over 25 years of experience in polling and marketing research, Janet Brown has developed a knack for asking the right people the right questions.Based in Calgary, Janet Brown Opinion Research specializes in designing research projects that give clients a clear understanding of the audiences and stakeholders they want to influence. In partnership with journalist Paul McLoughlin, Janet publishes the Wild Ride Update, an up-to-the-minute, no-agenda assessment of Alberta’s rapidly evolving provincial scene that weaves political insight with both public and proprietary polling. Janet is often invited to speak about political and social trends. She is a regular commentator on the CBC Calgary News at Six, Alberta Primetime on CTV2 in Alberta, and The Weekend Morning News on Global News Calgary. Janet continues to be active in the academic community and regularly delivers guest lectures at the University of Calgary and Mount Royal University. She is co-author of “Marginally Better: Polling in the 2015 Alberta Election”, a chapter to be included in “Orange Chinook,” an edited volume to be released by the University of Calgary Press in Fall 2018.
