Session Details
Not only have many nonprofits recently been faced with revamping how they deliver services, they’ve also seen an increase in demand for those services in a time when their revenues and abilities are decreasing. Funding and investment are critical for organizations to continue operating and supporting the community during these times.
However, corporate investment is shifting in new ways in response to not only the pandemic, but also economic and societal changes across Alberta and Canada. What do these changes mean for corporate investors and their investment response? What does future adaptation for corporate investments look like?
In this session, moderator Lori Hewson led a discussion around the impacts of multiple external factors on investment into the nonprofit sector, as well as ways in which nonprofits can realign their funding priorities to reflect the shifts in corporate investment.

Jeffrey Cyr
Panelist
For nearly 20 years, Jeffrey has provided strategic leadership for Indigenous, not-for-profit and government organizations. Mr. Cyr is currently active in supporting Indigenous social innovation and building Indigenous social finance mechanisms in Canada. Mr. Cyr was recently selected to be a 2019 Ashoka Fellow.
Lori Hewson
Moderator
Lori is the Director, Community Investment and Social Innovation at Suncor Energy Foundation and Suncor Energy. She's inspired by people who are creating positive social and environmental change. Practicing social innovation in a corporate context allows Lori the opportunity to work alongside these inspiring people on a daily basis, whether they are working from within business, or in the public or social sector. Lori states, "we’re all activists, to varying degrees, with a desire to make the world a better place for generations to come. I believe business, and the intrapraneurs within, play a significantly positive role in this context."
Elizabeth Morningstar Pottinger

Elizabeth is the Manager, Corporate Giving at CIBC. In her role, Elizabeth has responsibility for all aspects of community investments within CIBC’s funding focus areas of cancer, inclusive communities and financial education. Prior to joining CIBC in 2018, Elizabeth worked in fundraising within the arts and healthcare sectors for over 7 years. She holds an undergraduate degree from McMaster University, and graduate degrees from Queen’s University and the University of Toronto. Elizabeth earned her Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) designation in 2017. She is an active volunteer for the National Eating Disorder Information Centre and run champion for the 2020 CIBC Run for the Cure.

As PwC Canada's Chief Corporate Responsibility Officer, James leads the firm's focus on developing strategies and initiatives that bring PwC’s purpose to life in the marketplace. His work includes leadership and oversight to the firm's environmental sustainability portfolio and its societal commitment to empower PwCs everywhere to share their time, talent and treasure to help digitally upskill 1 million people and not-for-profits to help close society's digital divide.
James has testified in front of the Senate of Canada Special Committee on the Charitable Sector, and serves on the Board of Directors for the Philanthropic Foundations of Canada and is a member of the not-for-profit committee of the Risk Oversight and Governance Board at CPA Canada.
