New Australian Government Appoints an Assistant Minister for Finance, Charities, and Electoral Matters

Senator the Hon. Zed Seselja was appointed Assistant Minister for Finance, Charities, and Electoral Matters in Australia last week.

There are 57,710 charities in Australia generating $146.1 billion (AUD) of revenue and the sector is regulated by the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) who welcome the new Charities Minister and look forward to working with him.

This was an interesting development for the nonprofit sector, as CCVO has previously advocated that the Canadian government consider creating a structure that supports and sustains a vibrant nonprofit and charitable sector.

Imagine Canada has incorporated this concept in their letter template to Members of Parliament – encouraging them to include this, and other enabling policies related to the nonprofit sector in their political party platform.
