Charities and Political Activities: Income Tax Act Changes Passed
On October 29, 2018, as part of the Budget Implementation Act 2018, the Government of Canada proposed amendments to the Income Tax Act (ITA) that would remove limits on charities to engage in public policy advocacy activities. CCVO weighed in on the original proposed amendments and was pleased to see changes that reflected our feedback along with the feedback of our colleagues across the country. CCVO also provided input on the proposed guidance documents that were released by Canada Revenue Agency. The guidance documents have since been taken down and the government has issued notice that new guidance will become available at the end of the calendar year.
While the ITA changes have been passed, CCVO looks forward to the support of clear Canada Revenue Agency guidance to help charities understand the lay of the land and meaningfully engage in public policy dialogue.
