Hiring Students? Three Nonprofit Resources You Can't Live Without!

Written for the Nonprofit Chamber by Guest Blogger Maddie Murch, Calgary Economic Development

Let’s be real: you're making a real difference in the community, but you're probably stretched thin doing it. TalentED YYC is here to help by connecting you with talented post-secondary students who can support your initiatives. And we make it easy by offering three student hiring resources that your non-profit can't live without.

1. The Funding Quiz

We understand that finding the resources to attract student talent can be a challenge for non-profits, and we're here to help. There are many funding options available and our Funding Quiz helps you quickly determine which options you may be eligible for.

Maybe you always hire a student through the Canada Summer Jobs grant, but did you know that there are actually 24 different funders who can offer wage subsidies for student hires?

Here are a few types of roles / funding sources you may not have considered:

  • A marketing student funded through Student Work Placement Program (SWPP) can help give your social media a refresh

  • A communications student funded through Venture for Canada can help startup nonprofits with a strategy to target new supporters

  • An IT student funded through ICTC can help you solve technology problems

  • A student funded through Mitacs can help you with strategy and innovation projects

Taking our Funding Quiz will take you less than five minutes, but could be a game- changer for your organization! Once you answer the questions, there will be a list of funding options that we've identified. From there, you can check out the funder links directly or connect with our Employer Engagement team if you have any questions about the funding that you qualify for.

Since access to funding can help you hire more students, and pay those students, this is one nonprofit resource that you can't live without!

2. The Portal

So, you've secured funding, now what? Imagine posting a student position once and reaching hundreds of qualified candidates across Calgary's seven post-secondary institutions. Our portal is that simple, and includes just five steps.

Each school has different processes to post a job and we understand that you likely don't have time to navigate and sign up for each board separately. Our portal makes it easy for you to post student jobs! With a single click, you can access all of the qualified students in Calgary. Whether you want to access all seven schools, or one specific school, we can help!

The portal can be used for any type of student work experience. It is not limited to internships or co-ops. You can also use the portal to post projects, or volunteer based opportunities. If you need help deciding which type of experience you would benefit the most from, contact our Employer Engagement team!

Since the portal is sure to save you valuable time in your student search, it is one of the best tools for your nonprofit organization!

3. Resource Bank

Navigating the complexities of post-secondary expectations, HR requirements, onboarding, and evaluating your student can be challenging. This is especially true for non-profits that do not have an in-house HR specialist. Many of the resources in our extensive resource hub include tips for conducting interviews, onboarding guides, and there are even student job posting templates.

Whether you are a seasoned HR professional, or are finding it challenging to navigate the student / intern hiring process, our employer resource bank has a plethora of useful information. Since the resource bank includes something for every professional, we believe it is a necessary resource for your nonprofit!
