With less than a week until the municipal election, it has become all too apparent that something is missing from the debate. Where is the exchange about what we want Calgary to become? Tax rates are important, but at some point, shouldn't we see taxes for what they are - a means to an end? And when we’re talking about the “end”, shouldn't we be thinking well beyond the next electoral cycle?
Municipal politics is close to us. It’s about our city...our home.
It’s the morning commute, the kids’ swimming lessons. It’s the dog park. It’s Heritage Park. And it’s more than that – or a least it should be. As citizens and citizen-based organizations, are we challenging our candidates to tell us their vision for our city? What makes our city livable? What strategies will support thriving communities? What do our candidates want our city to become? Do they know? Is it compelling? Would you choose to live here?
