Alberta to Increase Solar Rebates for Nonprofits

On November 12, 2018, the Government of Alberta announced that the province will be increasing solar power rebates for both homeowners and nonprofits, as well as investing more money into solar energy programs. Since April 2017, more than 950 solar installations have been completed via the Residential and Commercial Solar Program run by Energy Efficiency Alberta.

Nonprofit organizations, as well as businesses, will now be able to get up to a 35% rebate on solar panel installation costs, for a maximum rebate of $1 million. Homeowners will also receive up to 35% off system costs, for a maximum rebate of $10,000. An average residential solar installation in Alberta would cost roughly $10,000 to $16,000 fully installed (several factors are involved in determining the cost).

The province is also providing an additional $7.5 million to help municipalities develop solar projects through the Alberta Municipal Solar Program.

As solar energy becomes more affordable, nonprofits and businesses can take advantage of opportunities to reduce their energy bills. Solar panel systems can be installed for as low as $2.5/watt.
