Written Submission for the Pre-Budget Consultations in Advance of the 2025 Alberta Provincial Budget
In advance of the 2025 provincial budget, organizations can submit letters or reports outlining their budget priorities. the Nonprofit Chamber’s submission uses data from the Facing the Storm State of the Sector Report and our recent interactive budgeting tool. Our submission outlines how essential nonprofits are in making Alberta a great place to live, work, and play. With Alberta’s growing population and rising inflation, nonprofits are facing increased demand but resources are not keeping pace.
We are making a modest request for budget 2025 that adjusts two cornerstone nonprofit funding programs to current economic conditions. The Community Initiatives Program (CIP) and the Community Facilities Enhancement Program (CFEP) deliver matched funding that encourages donations from Albertans to strengthen their communities. These programs have not seen a meaningful increase in years. Adjusting for inflation and population growth since 2006, these programs would sit at $67 million (CIP) and $86 million (CFEP) today, but they were budgeted at $16 million (CIP) and $50 million (CFEP) in 2024/25. A commitment to indexing major nonprofit sector granting programs to inflation and growth in the budget, starting with 2025/26, would go a long way to help Alberta nonprofits meet growing demand.
Our requests:
Increase the CIP budget to $67 million in budget 2025/26.
Increase the CFEP budget to $86 million in budget 2025/26.
Commit to indexing these programs to growth + inflation.
