By Alexa Briggs, the Nonprofit Chamber Vice President, Policy & Research

You asked, we answered. The Nonprofit Chamber wasn’t going to put together a vote kit for this upcoming federal election, but, as I was out at events over the last couple weeks, more than a few of you asked for #nonprofitsvote resources. So, I am happy to provide this vote kit that you can use and share with your colleagues, clients, volunteers, and let’s get nonprofits voting!

As always, all of this information is nonpartisan and intended to support nonprofits get out the vote. The federal election will be held on April 28, and because here at the Chamber we believe that democracy is awesome, we encourage everyone to openly celebrate Canadians’ right to go to the polls freely and fairly. Stay fully on the right side of nonpartisanship - don’t tell anyone who to vote for, or how you’re voting - but absolutely provide encouragement and support to identify what’s important in making a decision on how to vote (It’s different for all of us!), learn about the options, and then GO VOTE.

Get Informed

  • Find out about Top Nonprofit Sector Issues

Imagine Canada has a suite of nonprofit policy priorities that address: 1. Enabling Community through affordability, housing, mental health, environment, and workforce; and 2. Building Resilience of the Sector through more effective federal funding, better sector data, and stronger relationships between federal government and the sector.

  • Check out Platform Analysis for Nonprofit Issues

Imagine Canada is doing the heavy lifting to identify what parties have to say about the nonprofit policy priority areas. If some of those policy areas resonated with you, click the link and check out what each party is offering.

  • Watch the Debate

There are some big issues dominating the campaign trail this time around so the leaders’ debate will be a good opportunity to hear about some issues that are important to you but aren’t getting a ton of coverage. I’ll be listening for how the party leaders talk about nonprofits (if at all!) and any plans they might have to prioritize our workforce as we face uncertainty and turmoil with our largest trading partner.

  • Be Ready for Doorknockers

Candidates will be knocking on our doors and coming to our organizations to talk to us about what’s important. Here's a few questions I'll be keeping at the ready: Will the nonprofit sector be at the table as a valued partner when big decisions about plans to support Canadians are being made? Will they promise support programs designed specifically for the nonprofit sector? How will nonprofits be represented and heard in these crucial decisions? Will they commit to making sure nonprofits are a top priority when considering the needs of Canadians now and in the future?

  • Know the Parties

Find a list of all registered and deregistered parties in Canada.
